Woods:
olive (olea europea, see below);
ebony (diospyros celebica), very precious wood now rare in the market, extremely hard, variegated black color with dark brown (macassar variety);
wenge (milletia laurentii), characterized by a regular alternation of very hard fibers (dark brown color, perhaps harder than ebony) with other more elastic and lighter ones;
padouk (pterocarpus spp), uniform bright red color, regular grain, very hard;
birch (betula alba), light wood with regular grain, moderately hard.
Styles:
standard, for kendo-no-kata or ken-jutsu: length 102cm, tsuka 27cm, central sori 2cm, standard tip and section (shokissaki, hiramine);
katana, only for iaido, not suitable for contact practice: length 103cm, tsuka 25cm, central sori 3cm, elongated tip (daikissaki) and tapered section (gyo no mine);

olive wood
The olive tree is a plant that grows very slowly and is particularly long-lived (the oldest specimens easily exceed a thousand years), widely spread throughout the Mediterranean basin. The wood is very compact, resistant, and flexible, weighing about 850 kg/mc, characterized by veins with very different colors and patterns. What I use to make my bokuto comes from trees about 300 years old, planted in Calabria during the 1700s. To maintain its natural appearance, I finish it with a special water-based varnish, soft touch and that does not require maintenance other than a light cleaning with a damp cloth when necessary.
